A Study on Depression Level of the Hospitalized Puerpera During the Early Puerperium


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the number of patients with puerperal depression, the level of puerperal depression and the effects of delivery types and newborn babies¢¥ sex on the puerperal depression.
The 52 primipara and 52 multipara were selected as the puerperal group, who admitted by delivery in Seoul National University Hospital, Han-Gang Sung Sim Hospital and Hanil Hospital from November 8 to December 22, 1976. The control group were 54 healthy mothers of 1st grade pupils of a elementary school in Seoul. Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores obtained from the puerperal and control groups were analyzed using mean, percentage and t-test.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The mean SDS score of the puerperal group (36. 3) was higher than that of the control group (31. 3). There was significant difference in the mean SDS scores between them (p<0.005).
2. The mean SDS score of the primipara group (36.6) was higher than that of the multipara group (36.0) and there was no significant difference between them. But there were significant differences between control group and primipara group and multipara group respectively (p<0.005, p<0.01).
3. The newborn babies sex and delivery type had no influences in the puerperal depression.
4. In the C-section, the mean SDS score of primipara group (39. 1) was higher than that of the multipara group (33.5) and there was significant difference between them (p<0.05).
5. The puerpera who had more than 50 of SDS score was 4.6% of all puerpera.
